Google donated Wave to Apache

From: Google Wave <wave-noreply@google.com>

Dear Wavers,

More than a year ago, we announced that Google Wave would no longer be developed as a separate product. At the time, we committed to maintaining the site at least through to the end of 2010. Today, we are sharing the specific dates for ending this maintenance period and shutting down Wave. As of January 31, 2012, all waves will be read-only, and the Wave service will be turned off on April 30, 2012. You will be able to continue exporting individual waves using the existing PDF export feature until the Google Wave service is turned off. We encourage you to export any important data before April 30, 2012.

If you would like to continue using Wave, there are a number of open source projects, including Apache Wave. There is also an open source project called Walkaround that includes an experimental feature that lets you import all your Waves from Google. This feature will also work until the Wave service is turned off on April 30, 2012.

For more details, please see our help center.

Yours sincerely,

The Wave Team

The Mozilla Community in Vietnam

# This is the talk that Nguyen Ha Duong did on AsiaCamp 2011 in Kuala Lumpur

The Mozilla Community in Vietnam

Current status:

Lots of users.

Few contributors (less than 10 people)

We have got some contributing fests/sprints

Featured projects:

Pencil Project:

A GUI Prototyping and simple sketching tool.

Home: http://pencil.evolus.vn/en-US/Home.aspx

AVIM:

A Vietnamese input method editor for Firefox.

Home: http://www.1ec5.org/software/avim/

Difficulties:

People are afraid (and shy) to make mistakes.

So is there lots of ppl like to contribute but afraid of make
mistake? It's not really.

Remind people that software development is all about making
mistakes and learning from them as well as you can. +1

Also, buy asking the question in public they help other people who
may have the same problems but were also too shy to ask

People don't want to get out of their comfort zone.

Few loyal contributors.

Common question: What's the immediate and tangible benefit I could get?

Technology:

Fast-track update (people think it's really annoying).

Compatibility problems.

"High" memory usage (about 120 MB - 300 MB). We face the same
problem when spread in countryside, ex. on netbook, general the memory
in such kinds of pc less then 1G. --> more technical description, file
a bug.

More about this problem: Popular sites in Vietnam use extremely
much flash --> But AdBlock+ and FlashBlock DO help!

Ideas/solutions:

Firefox complaining day (tie in w. test drivers?)

Follow up with a Firefox love day (what is good about firefox,
what is good about open source - try to encourage people to focus all
the amazing things that have been achieved through open source,
community based, software development)

Sprints. (set attainable goals for the sprints - make it easy for
new people to participate and to succeed)

Communication skills in L10n.

Release parties and other events - We gather new contributer
mostly from yearly release party - with the rapid realease cycle every
6 weeks, you might want to try holding events around reaching
milestones in the Vietnamese community (completed localizations or
having added a number of new contributors - or hitting a milestone in
local marketshare)

More Contributing fests - we had monthly gathering and weekly
worknight. that's help. (Laura -- Grace - Berlin - presentation:
release parties without release numbers -> feature-based parties,
local goals)

Setting priorities.

Highlight a contributor of the month - give out a prize - great!

Attach incentives with the completion of projects (parties, etc)

Provide educational opportunities (about Firefox, other
technologies) for local open source community to recruit new
contributors

Would be fun to hook up a sprint or contribution fest on video
with another community (i.e in EU or elsewhere)

Firefox nightly builds: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/nightly/

Get data on how many people in Vietnam are on 3.6 and develop an
upgrade campaign

What about Internet cafes? Many Internet cafe manament software
come with Mozilla Firefox. Another similar idea is around
pre-installed Windows/Linux from hardware providers

At some point you should see the gray contour showing up. Release the mouse and it should be docked.
Thanks,

It worked.

However, I have to stress that: We need to drag the panel very very slowly to the left corner
When the panel and the edge of LibreOffice's main window becomes close (the distance is
as short as 1 or 2 pixels), we release the mouse.

It worked, but not so friendly, my wish is

1) Double click makes the panel docked
and/or
2) Make it easier to drag the panel
(Like LibreOffice magetic to stick the panel :))

Microsoft Windows TrueType Font File Parsing Code Execution (CVE-2011-3402)

http://www.checkpoint.com/defense/advisories/public/2011/cpai-06-nov.html

Vulnerability Details
The vulnerability is due to improper bounds checking when parsing
specially crafted TrueType Font (TTF) files. A remote attacker may
exploit this vulnerability by enticing an affected user to open a
specially crafted TTF file. Successful exploitation of this
vulnerability may allow execution of arbitrary code on a target system
or lead to a local elevation of privilege condition.

Apple's price strategy

hẳn so với PC sử dụng Windows.

table) giá rẻ hơn.

Apple's Lower Prices Are All Part of the Plan
By NICK WINGFIELD

Something unexpected has happened at Apple, once known as the tech
industry's high-price leader. Over the last several years it began
beating rivals on price.

People who wanted the latest Apple smartphone, the iPhone 4S, were
able to get one the day it went on sale if they were willing to wait
in a line, spend at least $199 and commit to a two-year wireless
service contract with a carrier.

Or they could have skipped the lines and bought one of the latest
iPhone rivals from an Apple competitor, as long as they were willing
to dig deeper into their wallets. For $300 and a two-year contract,
gadget lovers could have picked up Motorola's Droid Bionic from
Verizon Wireless, or they could bought the $230 Samsung Galaxy SII and
$260 HTC Amaze 4G, both from T-Mobile, under the same terms.

Apple's new pricing strategy is a big change from the 1990s, when
consumers regarded Apple as a producer of overpriced tech baubles,
unable to compete effectively with its Macintosh family of computers
against the far cheaper Windows PCs. But more recently, it began using
its growing manufacturing scale and logistics prowess to deliver Apple
products at far more aggressive prices, which in turn gave it more
power to influence pricing industrywide.

Apple's innovations — including products like the iPhone, iPad and the
ultrathin MacBook Air notebook — are justifiably credited for their
role in the company's resurgence under its chief executive and
co-founder, Steven P. Jobs, who died on Oct. 5. But analysts and
industry executives say Apple's pricing is an overlooked part of its
ability to find a large audience for those products beyond hard-core
Apple fans. Apple sold more than four million iPhone 4S smartphone
over its debut weekend.

People can still easily find less expensive alternatives, with less
distinctive and refined designs, to most Apple products. Within the
premium product categories where Apple is most at home though,
comparable devices often do no better than match or slightly undercut
Apple's prices. "They're not cheap, but I don't think they're viewed
as high-priced anymore," said Stewart Alsop, a longtime venture
capitalist in San Francisco.

Apple declined to comment for this article.

Prices in the ultrathin notebook category are an illustration of
Apple's strategy. While there are much cheaper laptops for sale,
ranging all the way down to bargain-basement netbooks that cost a few
hundred dollars, Apple's MacBook Air has become a hit among computer
users seeking the thinnest and lightest notebooks available. The
product starts at $999 for a model with an 11-inch screen.

On Oct. 11, the Taiwanese computer maker Asus introduced its answer to
the MacBook Air, a sleek device that uses Windows. But it was unable
to undercut Apple; the Asus computer also starts at $999. Samsung's
wafer-thin Series 9 notebook, with comparable features, costs $1,049.

The computer maker Acer, however, began undercutting the cheapest
MacBook Air this month with an $899 ultrathin notebook, the Aspire S
series, that has a bigger screen.

The original MacBook Air catered to a more rarefied audience when it
came out in early 2008, priced at a whopping $1,799 for a model with a
13-inch screen. A year ago Apple revamped the notebook to make it
thinner and smaller and reduced its entry-level prices to $999 and
$1,299 for models with 11-inch and 13-inch screens. Jean-Louis Gassée,
a venture capitalist and former Apple executive, said there was a
"collective gasp" at how low Apple priced the new MacBook Air.

The aggressive pricing, analysts say, reflects Apple's ability to use
its growing manufacturing scale to push down costs for the crucial
parts that make up its devices. Apple has also shown a willingness to
tap into its huge war chest — $82 billion in cash and marketable
securities last quarter — to take big gambles by locking up supplies
of parts for years, as it did in 2005 when it struck a five-year,
$1.25 billion deal with manufacturers to secure flash memory chips for
its iPods and other devices.

By buying up manufacturing capacity ahead of time, Apple forces its
competitors to scramble for the parts that are still available,
raising costs for their products, analysts say. Apple is the biggest
buyer of flash memory chips in the world, according to the research
firm iSuppli.

Mr. Gassée said Apple's pricing decision on the MacBook Air made it
clear that Apple's management of its supply chain had become a
"strategic weapon."

Another example of that was Apple's decision to price the entry-level
iPad at $499 when it was introduced early last year, hundreds of
dollars lower than many analysts expected. "I think everyone was
stunned at the cost of the iPad," said John Gallaugher, an associate
professor of information systems at Boston College. "It was a very
competitively priced device."

For a time, Apple's biggest competitors were unable to go below the
iPad's price with their own tablets. When Motorola Mobility Holding's
Xoom tablet hit the market in February, the cheapest model available
without a wireless service contract was $800. Motorola later released
an entry-level model with more storage than the least expensive iPad,
priced at $599.

After lackluster sales, Apple's major competitors are now finally
undercutting the iPad on price, though it is not clear how sustainable
that approach is. Motorola recently announced a plan to offer an
entry-level Xoom tablet for $379 at Best Buy stores for a limited
time. After Hewlett-Packard, having missed sales goals, announced
plans to discontinue its TouchPad line of tablets, it dropped the
price of its cheapest model to a fire-sale $99.

The most credible challenge to the iPad is likely to come from
Amazon's $199 Kindle Fire tablet, which goes on sale in November.
While analysts say they believe Amazon will lose money on each device
sold, the Internet retailer's plan is to use the device to encourage
purchases of other Amazon products and services, like e-books. Toni
Sacconaghi, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Company, said the
price of the iPad reflected a "mind-set change" at Apple after the
introduction of the first iPhone in 2007, which started at $499. That
was an eye-popping sum for a phone in markets like the United States,
where people had become accustomed to getting lower-price,
carrier-subsidized phones in exchange for committing to long wireless
contracts.

Only a few months after the product went on sale, Apple cut $200 off
the price of the high-end model of the iPhone, to $399. Apple shifted
gears again in 2008 with a new model called the iPhone 3G that it
priced at $199, after beginning to accept handset subsidies from its
carrier partners, something it did not do with its first version of
the phone. Carriers pay Apple more for the latest iPhones — around
$600 each, analysts estimate — aiming to profit by locking consumers
into wireless plans.

Mr. Sacconaghi said Apple's pricing of the original iPhone and its
exclusive distribution deal with AT&T in the United States at the time
created an opening for Google and its handset partners to flood the
market with phones running its Android operating system.

While Apple's iPhone business is thriving, Android handsets accounted
for 43.4 percent of the worldwide smartphone market in the second
quarter, compared with 18.2 percent for Apple, the research firm
Gartner estimates.

Many carriers now offer older Android handsets that cost customers
nothing if they sign up for two-year contracts. And now even Apple is
getting into that act: when it announced its latest iPhone model this
month, it said its two-year-old iPhone 3GS would be free with a
two-year contract.

Future of Linux (desktop), web app, SaaS

1. MS Project -> Redmine (quản lý công việc)
2. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint -> Zoho, Google Docs
3. MS Outlook -> Zimbra

-----

Tham khảo:

As I was reading yet another article about the problems people are having with Unity, I was thinking about how we may be focused on the wrong thing when we fret about how the desktop interface works.

Shouldn't we, as a community, be focused on the application ecosystem? Or has the rise of software as a service caused the community to essentially declare this space "done"?

The article in question was Bruce Byfield's Linux Magazine blog entry that highlighted a Launchpad bug discussion about one Ubuntu developer's concern that Canonical was basically disconnected from the Ubuntu community with their constant insistence that the Unity interface not be as configurable as prior interfaces.

I'll let you read Byfield's article, since it keenly illustrates the division of thought between the old and the new Linux community. But this division, and all of the trouble it's caused, suddenly has me wondering if we're not all looking at the wrong thing.

The Unity argument intrigues me on several levels. On the most personal level, it interests me because, well, I'm not the biggest Unity fan, either. I like the interface as a concept, but like most Linux users, I miss the capability to configure the interface more to my liking.

On a broader level, the problem people have with Unity seems to be this lack of configuration, which reflects the new trend in interfaces: light, fast, pretty containers for what's really important in a mobile interface world that's increasingly dependent on SaaS--the browser.

But here's my question: we seem to be focused so much on the interface, and yet Linux is still not perceived as a strong contender in the other half of the what-makes-a-good-desktop-operating-system equation: applications. And that's being a bit generous.

On the very basic level, Linux has what it takes: strong office suites, file managers, browsers, text editors, music library systems. But anything much beyond that, and you've got to either run a virtual machine or get online.

I've been nervous about this before. Last week, as I Twittered a link to a story about Canonical's new focus on the business desktop, Twitter reader André Koot came back with an interesting reply that seemed to sum up every commercial Linux vendor's feeling about applications:

"Who needs (corporate) apps when there's saas? Biggest problem is current vendor lock-in - proprietary non-standards…"

A lot of people, including me, have seen SaaS as the savior of the Linux desktop. SaaS neatly allows Linux to skirt around the elephant in the room: Linux on the desktop hasn't been successful because of a pretty interface; it hasn't been successful because there is a perceived lack of applications. A perception, I should add, which is basically right, at least as far as the average user is concerned.

SaaS, however, changes all that. Cloud-based applications will let anyone with a browser access the same applications, no matter what operating system they are using. Clearly, this is what everyone is shooting for, not just Linux. Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 and Apple's current OS X Lion show clear signs of what's been called "appification." Canonical's Unity is just their way of approaching this paradigm. Heck, even the aforementioned LibreOffice is working on an online version.

My concern here is that in the rush to shift to SaaS, we have seemingly abandoned any pretense that the native Linux application space is worth working on. I cannot remember the last time there was a major new innovation in Linux application space. (LibreOffice doesn't count; it's a fork of a pre-existing office suite.) Before that, what was it? Chrome (another browser)? Amarok and Banshee (both great music players, with a decidedly iTunes bent)?

In all of the kerfuffle about the interface, has Linux development just up and abandoned this side of the desktop equation? If so, if Linux has really truly pinned all of its hopes to SaaS, then the desktop Linux community should admit it to themselves and freely accept the fact that SaaS is the target for which Linux is now aiming.

Is this so wrong? If you read my entry yesterday, then you will know that I am becoming increasingly nervous about this. Better, I think, to keep working on native solutions and aim Linux at a business and general consumer market that doesn't want or need every single piece of their data out in the cloud.

Don't ignore SaaS, to be sure… but don't ignore native Linux application development, either.

For reference, here is the information about this functionality in

Similar terminology matching is available in Virtaal.

For the upcoming version of Pootle we have support for translation
memory during translation. The new version isn't quite ready for release
yet, but we have already used it successfully at some localisation
events and it looks very promising. It uses an online Translation Memory
service that we can keep up to date with the latest translations of
things like LibreOffice.

This service is already available with Virtaal 0.7. I don't think the
current TM database has the very latest LibreOffice translations, but we
can hopefully do a refresh of the data quite soon.

If people are able to help in testing or giving the last bit of
refinement for the upcoming Pootle release, that would be great to speed
up the process. A testing server for the upcoming release is available
here:

http://test.locamotion.org/

It is loaded with some old copy of the database of our main Pootle
server. All data entered there will be lost at some stage, but feel free
to play around. You can see a translation memory result here, for
example:

Scrum is hard for Vietnamese

" Team be self-organizing and self-led":
Đây là yêu cầu khó, đòi hỏi kinh nghiệm, tuổi tác và sự chuyên nghiệp.
Ở VN build 1 team như vậy khá khó (tìm) và cũng tốn tiền của tuyển
dụng, giữ chân.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrum_%28development%29
Core Scrum roles

The core roles in Scrum teams are those committed to the project in
the Scrum process—they are the ones producing the product (objective
of the project).

Product Owner
The Product Owner represents the voice of the customer and is
accountable for ensuring that the Team delivers value to the business.
The Product Owner writes customer-centric items (typically user
stories), prioritizes them, and adds them to the product backlog.
Scrum teams should have one Product Owner, and while they may also be
a member of the Development Team, it is recommended that this role not
be combined with that of ScrumMaster.[11]

Team
The Team is responsible for delivering the product. A Team is
typically made up of 5–9 people with cross-functional skills who do
the actual work (analyse, design, develop, test, technical
communication, document, etc.). It is recommended that the Team be
self-organizing and self-led, but often work with some form of project
or team management.

ScrumMaster
Scrum is facilitated by a ScrumMaster, also written as Scrum
Master, who is accountable for removing impediments to the ability of
the team to deliver the sprint goal/deliverables. The ScrumMaster is
not the team leader but acts as a buffer between the team and any
distracting influences. The ScrumMaster ensures that the Scrum process
is used as intended. The ScrumMaster is the enforcer of rules. A key
part of the ScrumMaster's role is to protect the team and keep them
focused on the tasks at hand. The role has also been referred to as
servant-leader to reinforce these dual perspectives.

removed from Pootle
To: l10n@global.libreoffice.org

Hi,

There will not be any more releases from the LibreOffice 3.3 code
line. LibreOffice 3.3.5 was planned, but apparently due to lack of
developer's interest, only 1 bugfix went in after 3.3.4, so it does
not make sense to release it. I would like to remove the related
projects from Pootle soon. We will save some resources and new
contributors will not be confused by those old files. If anybody needs
the files, I let a few days to archive them.

Thanks,
Andras

Apple donates ALAC under Apache license

cf.
[1] http://opensource.apple.com/
[2] http://alac.macosforge.org/
[3] http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/
[4] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Flash#Format
[5] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Audio

The Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) is an audio codec developed by
Apple and supported on iPhone, iPad, most iPods, Mac and iTunes. ALAC
is a data compression method which reduces the size of audio files
with no loss of information. A decoded ALAC stream is bit-for-bit
identical to the original uncompressed audio file.

The Apple Lossless Audio Codec project contains the sources for the
ALAC encoder and decoder. Also included is an example command line
utility, called alacconvert, to read and write audio data to/from Core
Audio Format (CAF) and WAVE files. A description of a 'magic cookie'
for use with files based on the ISO base media file format (e.g. MP4
and M4A) is included as well.

The Apple Lossless Audio Codec sources are available under the Apache
license. Details can be found here
http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.

Fwd: RE: [libreoffice-users] LibO 3.4.3 cannot open password protected Word 2010 file

Thank you, Nguyen,

The workaround is to store in Word 97-2003 .doc format and use the weaker security that provides. This is the only case of a password-protected Microsoft Word document that I have seen be readable by OpenOffice and LibreOffice software.

You'll have to experiment to see if your read-only and revision-tracking locks are preserved in that case and, if preserved, whether they are preserved in LibreOffice opening of the document. I expect that these will be dropped or the recipient, even you, might be unable to release those locks because the password verifier used in the ODF format is not derived the same way.

- Dennis E. Hamilton

ADDITIONAL DOCUMENT FORENSICS

I was able to download and open the Aaa.docx file in Word 2010 without difficulty. (The first of 4 words on the single-page document is "Aaa".) I was also able to open the file in Word 2007 too. I was also able to allow editing of the document by using the same password. Oh, and I see change-tracking is enabled. So the fourth word in the document is actually a tracked deletion and not an underlined word in red. Oh, and change-tracking is forced in the document settings. Nice.

This password protection is not part of the OOXML specification as far as I know. It is a separate technique, documented as MS-OFFCRYPTO, by which the entire file is encrypted with a "wrapper" that allows Word to recognize it. The name of the file is unchanged, and Word will recognize the special format and request that the password be provided. This particular form of encryption is unlike anything that is used with ODF documents (although there are discussions to provide something comparable to achieve improved document security).

Word 2007 and Word 2010 use stronger encryption techniques on DOCX files than are supported with DOC files, so that is another reason to try the workaround.

I notice that if I use "Open with" LibreOffice Writer 3.3.2, nothing happens - Writer starts to open and then closes automatically.

If I use "Open with" OpenOffice.org 3.2, the file format is not recognized at all.

Trường DHBK Hà Nội vẫn dạy conio.h :)

Chào các bác,

Theo bạn Hà Quang Dương thì:
"Trường em (Đại học Bách khoa Hà Nội) vẫn conio và chỉ conio =)) (cơ
mà chỉ bị mấy môn cơ sở thôi)"

cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conio.h

LibreCAD as part of LibreOffice suite?

Hello,

I'm a LibreCAD ( http://www.librecad.org ) developer.

Is it a good idea to include LibreCAD as part of the LibreOffice suite?

The good: LibreCAD provides feature rich drawing (more than CAD, I use it to draw general 2D geometry shapes)

The bad: no shared code with LibreOffice yet

The ugly: LibreCAD is GPLv2

Thank you for you time!

Nokia goes for Linux and Qt

Linus shares the pains and the joys of Linux kernel development

Happy reading :)

Re: [HanoiLUG] HP to put $4.5 billion in open source investments do the trick
