Hi Mozillians:

As you all know, Firefox is our primary point of leverage today as we
extend deeper into mobile, develop new features, and grow our user base
and brand. To stay relevant, we must continue to deliver a
high-performing and elegant browser that people around the world want to
use.

At the beginning of this year, we committed to a 2012 goal of increasing
overall user satisfaction while maintaining our market relevance in a
highly competitive space. We are measuring that using the year over year
growth in our Active Daily Instances (ADIs).

Today, we are excited to share news of a change that could account for
millions of additional ADIs this year.

Here's a quick summary: We started testing a new content delivery
network ("CDN") a few weeks ago to serve Firefox installers requested
from download.mozilla.org. CDNs are huge networks of globally
distributed servers, each mirroring content from customers. Since large
providers can have as many as 60,000 servers around the world, users can
be assured they'll get their content as quickly as possible.

What our test showed was that our users, particularly in countries
outside of North America and Western Europe, were significantly more
likely to complete an install when downloading from the CDN. This effect
was seen in virtually every country we checked. CDN powered downloads
had an average install ratio that was 13.4% higher than our current,
community-provided mirror powered downloads.

After those very positive test results, we made the decision to move
Firefox downloads off of the mirror network and onto the CDN.

This change, which would not have been possible without the generosity
of our community, supports our evolution, growth, and our goal of
continuing to find ways to make Firefox even more awesome.

Here is a link to the note we sent to the mirror community members last
Thursday night:

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks,

Asa Dotzler
